Infectious and dynamic Latin Jazz | Oslo Jazz 2024

The Cuban composer and pianist Alfredo Rodríguez has truly made a name for himself with a heartfelt and brilliantly executed Latin jazz style drawn straight from the streets of Havana, his hometown. As he himself has stated: "I play what I live." He has transitioned from a young promising pianist to a recognized, Grammy-nominated star worldwide.

His career took off when a young Rodríguez represented Cuba at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where the legendary Quincy Jones was captivated by his talent. Jones and Rodríguez began a collaboration in the USA, and thus the adventure began. Throughout his career, Rodriguez has notably distinguished himself by blending the Cuban salsa genre timba with a more conventional jazz approach.

Rodriguez's latest album, Coral Way, is named after a street in Miami, which became his new home a few years ago. This lively and vibrant street has inspired Rodríguez to blend all the sounds that flow through Miami, from Latin pop, timba, salsa, bachata, tango, reggaeton, and bolero. The music on the album swings continuously and exudes a life-affirming energy. And there is little doubt that this energy will easily engage the audience at Cosmopolite.
