New prize winner-project | Oslojazz 2025

Anna Ueland is a keyboardist, pianist, and composer from Valdres, currently based in Trondheim, where she recently completed a bachelor’s degree. Ueland is an energetic and versatile musician, performing with great passion and joy. In recent years, you've most likely seen her play at festivals and jazz venues with acts such as Selma French, Science Fair, KRISE, Don’t Feed the Sun, Madmax, and Veslemøy Narvesen.

Ueland was awarded the Usbl Jazz Talent prize at last year's Oslo Jazz Festival, where part of the award includes a concert at the following year's festival. The result is “Populærmusikk for likesinnede” (Popular Music for the Like-Minded), which will be performed for the first time at the Oslo Jazz Festival with an entirely new septet!

Ueland shares the following about the music:

“Populærmusikk for likesinnede” is almost a kind of self-realization project, where I let my gut feeling, nostalgia, and inspiration lead the way. The music has taken shape based on what has left a mark on me—pop culture, films, series, music, books. Susanne Sundfør. Björk. The Beatles. Espen Reinertsen. Jenny Hval. Twin Peaks. Spaghetti westerns and J Dilla. Moby, Todd Terje, and snowboard films. Maybe the music could be described as experimental gangster-pop?"

She is joined by six of her favorite musicians: Hans Hulbækmo on drums, Nicolas Leirtrø on double bass, Peder Overvik Stuberg on guitar, Selma French Bolstad on fiddle, Selma Edwards Granly on cello, and Håkon Brunborg on viola and steel guitar. Everyone will play and everyone will sing. Ueland herself plays synth, organ, mellotron, and synth bass. Welcome!
