To call Atomic a Scandinavian free jazz supergroup may be quite appropriate. The group consists of Fredrik Ljungkvist on sax, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Håvard Wiik on the piano, Ingenbrigt Håker Faten og bass and Hans Hulbækmo on drums.
Atomic was established in 2000 and garnered a fast following with their first two studio albums. Namely Feet Music (2002) and Boom Boom (2003). The band was described as originals with their own distinct energy unlike many others in the Scandinavian jazz scene.
The band describes their sound as “part academic lecture, part a fun night out on the town”. Wiik and Ljungkvists compositions are made up of meticulously constructed melodies combined with explosive passages and sudden turns.
With their latest album Pet Variations (2018) the band moved in a brand new direction. Atomic showed a more eclectic side this time by interpreting musicians like Olivers Messiaen and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.
After 20 years of touring Atomic has decided to disband. Because of life changes and personal priorities the band has found it more and more difficult to keep the musical momentum. In other words, this will be one of your last chances to experience this band live!
