Bodil’s blue notes | Oslojazz 2025

Bodil Niska is an institution in Norwegian jazz, with a long career as a leading saxophonist inspired by greats such as Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, and Coleman Hawkins. She boasts a soft, yet powerful and expressive tone. Her musical approach draws from the golden years of jazz, blending it with contemporary jazz.

Niska has received several awards for her contributions to jazz as a genre and for her commitment to female jazz musicians, including the Oslo Jazz Festival's Ella Award (2009), the Sildajazz Prize (2005), and the Nordprofil Prize (2009). Niska is also well known to many from Bare Jazz, a meeting place for jazz lovers, musicians, and music journalists from both home and abroad.

Her quartet has many years of experience with its melodic and personal jazz interpretations. Magne Arnesen (piano), Stig Hvalryg (bass), and Marcus Lewin (drums) are also known for their collaborations with numerous other Norwegian and international jazz musicians, but they have been Bodil's regular and brilliant rhythm section in recent years.

For this concert, Bodil has invited the American jazz vocalist England Brooks, who perfectly matches Bodil's sound with her soulful singing style. With her deep and beautiful voice, she has thrilled listeners in jazz clubs and concert halls around the world.
