Groovy safari | Oslojazz 2026
The Norwegian quintet Danakil Safari plays music inspired by Ethiojazz – an Ethiopian style of music that is in turn inspired by an American style with its own African roots. The name and desert themes are inspired by the extremely inhospitable area of the Danakil Depression – an area in northern Ethiopia where one can encounter acid lakes and volcanic activity. These are also characteristics that can describe the experience of being at a concert with Danakil Safari.
Danakil Safari's original music grew out of frequent concert activities in the Oslo area. The band started by playing traditional Ethiojazz repertoire, but quickly developed their own twist on the style. The musicians' other sources of inspiration began to add different energies to the music, such as different forms of rock, rough electronic club vibes and improvised music. Many of the songs on the debut album From The Soil, started as free, collective improvisations in the studio.
Danakil Safari's music is intensely groovy, darker than Mordor, inspired by places far warmer than Oslo – and always creates a really good atmosphere.
