The Oslo Jazz Festival and the Oslo Chamber Music Festival are proud to present the work Magnificat, featuring Ellen Andrea Wang, The Women’s Choral Society of the University of Oslo, and Hanna Paulsberg!
The choral work Magnificat is composed by Wang and consists of 10 compositions for women’s choir, double bass, and saxophone. With this, Wang made her debut as a composer for choir, and she also performs as both vocalist and bassist.
The texts are taken from the Gospel of Luke and deal with Mary’s overwhelming experience of being about to give birth to a child: love, faith, doubt, the search for strength, hope, joy, and the uncertainty of what the future will bring.
Few female composers have written music for the Magnificat text, despite it being about a woman’s experiences, which makes it especially exciting that the eminent Ellen Andrea Wang has composed this work for The Women’s Choral Society of the University of Oslo.
Magnificat was first performed at Molde Cathedral as the closing concert of Moldejazz 2021, when Ellen Andrea Wang was artist-in-residence. Now we have the opportunity to experience the work in the grand Oslo Cathedral!
