Compelling and lively trio | Oslojazz 2024
Despite his young age, the American pianist Emmet Cohen has been delivering classic yet expansive jazz for over a decade. With a blend of fresh interpretations of timeless standards and his own vital compositions, he has achieved great success with both concert audiences and critics worldwide.
He has released six albums under his own name, usually in a trio format where the rest of the lineup consists of his faithful companions bassist Philip Norris and drummer Kyle Poole. The latest album, Uptown in Orbit, showcases the trio in a lively form, where in-depth knowledge of jazz history and virtuosity go hand in hand. Cohen has also achieved great success with the livestream series "Live from Emmet’s Place," which emerged during the coronavirus pandemic and has now released over a hundred episodes.
However, it is on the concert stage where he truly shines. Here, you get first-hand experience of Cohen's delicate touch and energetic runs on the keys, and you get close to the telepathic interplay with Norris and Poole. The band's exceptional chemistry has developed over many years on stage, and they exhibit a swinging joy of playing that easily infects the audience.
The Emmet Cohen Trio (with guests) delivered a magnificent concert at Moldejazz in 2023. Now it's finally Oslo Jazz Festival's turn to experience one of the most sought-after piano trios out there.
