Irreversible force | Oslojazz 2024

The quintet Irreversible Entanglements has made a powerful mark on the jazz scene with a series of amazing albums, including last year's Protect Your Light, which was released on Impulse! Records. The music draws on the free jazz tradition, infused with a fresh dose of punk/DIY mentality and a clear political edge.

The band was formed when saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet/vocalist Camae Ayewa (also known as Moor Mother), and bassist Luke Stewart performed at the "Musicians Against Police Brutality" event in 2015, following the killing of Akai Gurley in New York.

Trumpeter Aquilles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes subsequently joined the lineup, and their self-titled debut album from 2017 is the sound of the first time all five members of the band played together. The album was unanimously praised by the press and deservedly landed on many albums of the year- lists, including Stereogum, NPR, and Wire Magazine.

Led by Ayewa's compelling and fiery storytelling, Irreversible Entanglements is a synchronized and battle-ready collective. The band's distinct individual voices converge under powerful slogans, with an irresistible groove and Ayewa at the front.
