Paal is one of hardest working jazz drummers in Europe today, with countless live show at festivals and clubs.
This year he’s playing two shows at the festival, one solo and one with his newly formed newly formed Paal Nilssen-Love Circus.
Paal Nilssen-Love Circus is originally based on a commission to Oslo World 2020, the music is inspired by his stays in Ethiopia and Brazil and his passion for music from Mali and Senegal. To bring his vision to life he is joined by an impressive cast of musicians from the jazz and improv scene.. Christian Meaas Svendsen, known from Large Unit on electronic bass, Oddrun Lilja who made a big splash last years with her solo acts LILJA and the album Marble (2020) joins on guitar. Juliana Venter is the lead singer, interchanging between Arabic music and contemporary without skipping a beat. In the brass section we have Norwegian heavyweights like Thomas Johansson from bands like Cortex and Scheen Jazzorkester and Signe Emmluth on saxophone who is the next years Jazzstipendiat at Moldejazz. Lastly we have Kalle Moberg on accordion, a renown improvisor and member of PNL Large Unit.
The Circus can be experienced at Victoria Nasjonal Jazzscene at Oslo Jazzfestival 2021.
