Organic and harmonic | Oslojazz 2025
The French saxophonist Sakina Abdou has assembled a remarkable trio with pianist Marta Warelis and drummer Toma Gouband. In a free and fluid form, we hear the musicians in a beautiful dialogue that alternates between the harmonic and the powerful. At the center of it all are Abdou's pulsating saxophone tones.
Abdou, Warelis, and Gouband are all central names on the international free jazz and improv scene, where Abdou performs, among other projects, in Eve Risser’s Red Desert Orchestra, while Warelis and Gouband have both made their mark in collaborations with, respectively, Evan Parker and Hamid Drake.
On their first album as a trio, Hammer, Roll & Leaf, all the track titles consist of various combinations of the three words, and sonically, there is a clear kinship between the compositions. There is an overarching organic approach that characterizes the music, allowing it plenty of room to breathe and bloom. Abdou is surrounded by Warelis’ omnipresent piano playing, which always shines brightly, with Gouband's rhythmic and dynamic drumming tying it all together in the background. Together, they form an incredibly fascinating trio that must be experienced.
