A Scandinavian songbook

The idea of a quartet album inspired by her “scandinavian songbook” is something Solveig Slettahjell has been pondering for a long time, and she has been collecting songs for just this project for years. As always, she has had the pleasure of gathering material without obvious connections to each other, before tying them together with her own recognisable style and voice.

In this eclectic collection you will find pieces from Edvard Grieg’s “Ved Rondane”, Eva Dahlgren’s “Guldlock”, Alf Prøysen’s “Trassvisa hennes Tora”, in addition to songs by Lars Lillo Stenberg, Allan Edwall, Orup, and Anne Grete Preus, all of which have been ascribed new material by Slettahjell herself, and Andreas Ulvo.

Alongside her quartet, consisting of the talented Andreas Ulvo on piano, Trygve Waldemar Fiske on bass, and Pål Hausken on drums, she has attacked these songs with the same kind of love and irreverence that can be found in the jazzy “American Songbook”. The finished collection is influenced by a kind of Scandinavian chamber jazz that has inspired many musicians before, but now has been transformed by Slettahjell and her quartet's unique character.
