Stars of the new Bristol sound | Oslojazz 2026
The Bristol-based Tara Clerkin Trio has made a name for itself in recent years with strong releases on the acclaimed record label World of Echo, and is now gearing up for the release of a new album in June titled Somewhere Good. The title track and first single from the album was recently named “Best New Music” by Pitchfork, where high praise was used and the trio was mentioned in the same breath as both Tortoise and Stereolab.
This comes as no surprise when you hear the soundscapes that Tara Clerkin, Sunny Joe Paradisos, and Pat Benjamin inhabit. Their music sounds organic and dreamlike, drawing inspiration from jazz, electronica, and psychedelia, which is filtered into a hazy and hypnotic whole. You can especially hear the legacy of the trip-hop genre, which has strong roots in Bristol. Clerkin’s melodic sensibility shines through a veil of effects and loops, with a vocal that carries a calming effect and a strong sense of presence.
The trio weaves these different musical strands into an impressive tapestry and is rightly mentioned as one of the most exciting young bands out there within jazz and its surrounding genres.
