Tigran Hamasyan: StandArt
The University Aula

A new standard | Oslojazz 2024
Armenian Tigran Hamasyan took the entire jazz world by storm while still in his early teens. He was heralded as the next great pianist by none other than Brad Mehldau, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea, and Hamasyan has certainly lived up to those sky-high expectations. With a fresh perspective and an unconventional approach to jazz, he blends elements of jazz, Armenian folk melodies, rock, and classical music into a challenging yet captivating whole.
His latest project is StandArt, where Hamasyan delves into standard songs from the Great American Songbook. This has been done countless times before, but nowhere near as successfully as Hamasyan's original approach. He breathes new life into the songs with fresh arrangements and spellbinding solos, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, following every musical turn.
At the concert in Aulaen, we will experience the StandArt universe in a delightful trio format, featuring Joe Martin on bass and Arman Mnatsakanyan on drums, alongside Tigran himself at the piano. And as a bonus will Mathias Eick appear as a guest on a couple of songs!
