Playful lyrical sensitivity | Oslojazz 2025

With a captivating atmosphere and compelling interplay, the Tuva Halse Quintet draws you into its lyrical universe from the very first note. Halse draws inspiration from nature, relationships, and human emotions. Rooted in Nordic jazz, the quintet finds influence from musicians such as Kenny Wheeler, Adam Baldych, and Mathias Eick, while elements of folk and classical music are also clearly present.

The quintet consists of five young names who have made a strong mark on the jazz scene. The band's debut album Two, released on Jazzland Recordings, received glowing reviews both nationally and internationally upon its release in the fall of 2023. In 2024, Halse was honored with the prestigious title of NTNU Ambassador, praised for “her playful lyrical sensitivity and a rare, bold emotional depth in tone and style.” That same year, she also received DNB’s #huninvesterer grant at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival.

The music constantly shifts between the melancholic and sentimental to the intense and insistent. The result is a distinctive and expressive sound in a universe full of contrasts that deeply engages the listener.
