In When I Return's small musical universe, you encounter seven searching and attentive musicians in a setting where their musicality is both expressed and challenged. The music is open and breathing, giving the musicians free rein to explore within melodic frameworks where voices and instrumental lines intertwine.
When I Return is led by saxophonist Brede Sørum and trombonist Jørgen Bjelkerud. Together they compose the music, which has a distinctly youthful character and is rooted in the American jazz tradition, while also emphasizing a more Norwegian approach that explores the outer limits of the instruments in terms of texture, composition, ensemble playing, and interaction.
In February 2026, the septet released its highly anticipated debut album, The Weight Of Bloom, on Jazzland Recordings, to a warm reception from both audiences and critics. The band's members are a busy and highly sought-after group within Norway's young jazz scene. They have distinguished themselves both as individual musicians and through other projects such as Schemes, Lightning Trio, Dafnie, and Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. The compositions of Bjelkerud and Sørum become large melting pots in which the different musicians, with their varied backgrounds and influences, are united into something new, fresh, and exciting: When I Return.
