Brazilian rhythms at Oslojazz
A week full of Brazilian music
August 6, 2025:
Brazil has a rich and adventurous musical history, and the Oslo Jazz Festival 2025 features Brazilian music as a recurring theme throughout the program, in various forms.
Hermeto Pascoal is a living legend on the Brazilian music scene and has been active since the 1950s, with absolutely no plans of slowing down anytime soon. It’s always a major celebration to witness Pascoal and his band Grupo perform live on stage — you never know what might come around the next musical corner. We promise you an unforgettable and sensory-rich concert experience with Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo at Cosmopolite this evening.
Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo performs at Cosmopolite, Tuesday August 12th, 21.00. Tickets can be purchased here.
Dora Morelenbaum has quickly become a star in the refreshing new wave of Brazilian music. Her debut album Pique has been warmly received by both critics and audiences. In Morelenbaum’s music, you can hear hints of bossa nova, tropicália, and psicodelia — all interpreted in a fresh, modern take, expressed through her distinctive style.
Dora Morelenbaum performs at Cosmopolite Thursday August 14th, 21.00. Tickets can be purchased here.
With her warm, visual, and cinematic signature style, Charlotte Dos Santos has developed an artistic expression that is as melodic as it is deeply personal and cohesive. This fall, Dos Santos is releasing the EP Neve Azul, which continues to explore her artistic universe and Brazilian roots. With lyrics in Portuguese and English, and production inspired by bossa nova, jazz, and soul, Neve Azul reveals a new, more intimate side of her melodic expression.
Charlotte Dos Santos performs at Blå Friday August 15th, 21.30. Tickets can be purchased here.
Commissioned by MUNCH, percussionist and storyteller Celio de Carvalho has composed brand new music inspired by the lively illustrations in the newly released book Munch i mylderet by author Catherine Ingram and illustrator Celyn Brazier. The music was created in collaboration with a stellar lineup of musicians — Per Olav Kobberstad (guitar), Bruna Santana (vocals), and Gustavo Tavares (cello) — who together form the brand-new quartet Quarteto Art. Join them for their very first performance together! On this day, the musicians will also be joined by illustrator Celyn, who will be inspired by the live rhythms and create new versions of her drawings — the very ones that inspired the music.
We welcome you to an exploratory concert performance with Brazilian rhythms, improvisation, and playful interaction between music and drawing!
Quarteto Art & Munch i mylderet performs at MUNCH Saturday August 16th, 12.00. Tickets can be purchased here. The concert ticket includes free museum admission!
One of the final events of the festival is a delightful setup at Becco, where DJ Erlend Mokkelbost will team up with DJ Gareth Stephens from the highly credible label Mr. Bongo Records. Mr. Bongo dedicates much of its catalog to Brazilian music, spotlighting legends such as Arthur Verocai, Jorge Ben, and Gal Costa — and also Dora Morelenbaum, who is performing at the festival. Expect some Brazilian gems in this red-hot DJ set.
DJ Erlend Mokkelbost and DJ Gareth Stephens + Mini-concert with Leoparden performs at Becco on Saturday August 16th, 23.00. Tickets sold at the door.
Additionally, we’d like to mention that we’ve invited students from Oslo’s Activity School to experience the Norwegian-Brazilian band RITMOS BRASILEIROS. They breathe new life into both Norwegian and Brazilian children’s songs. Samba, carnival, and songs about strange animals set the tone when two traditional musicians from Brazil and three jazz musicians from Norway come together for rhythmic play. Drum-king Celio de Carvalho from Rio de Janeiro and firecracker singer Vera Americo from Brasília have joined forces with guitar virtuoso Per Olav Kobberstad, trombone ace Kristoffer Kompen, and jazzman Torstein Ellingsen.
NB! Closed event.
