Oslojazz 2023 x Herr Nilsen

This year we will be hosting six concerts at Herr Nilsen throughout the entire festival week.

A SOUGHT AFTER TRIO OF LEGENDS

The trio, which has now been together for over 20 years, has been recognized for charting new ground, with its synergistic playing, yet thoughtful music. They have recorded eight albums and one DVD together, all of which display their distinctive sound, whether exploring the depths of jazz standards, or playing their own original compositions. Together, the three musicians with great ears and a lineup rich in tradition, make for passionate, grooving, highly sophisticated music.

LOOKING FORWARD WITHOUT COMPROMISE

Elephant9 is a musical monster out of the ordinary, the likes have not been seen nationally, nor internationally. Music is at its purest and strongest when it feels free, dynamic and ever evolving. In a time where music - more often than not - is held back by electronic devices, set timeframes and rigid song structures, it’s refreshing to witness the opposite.

RICH, COLORFUL, AND CAPTIVATING GUITARPLAY

Ella Zirina is a guitar virtuoso and composer from Latvia, based in Amsterdam. Her compositions are built on musical improvisations and create a personal and emotional sonic environment. She won first prize in the Virtual Jazz Club Competition in 2021 for her rendition of “I Loves You Porgy” by Gershwin - with the help of her trio. Expanding on Ella’s passion for texture, the Ella Zirina Trio adds double bass and drums into the mix to create rich and colorful compositions.

A JOURNEY THROUGH THE CHANGES OF THE SEASONS IN SCOTLAND
Fergus McCreadie is one of the most exciting young jazz pianists on the world stage. With his unique blend of Jazz and Scottish folk music inspired by his country’s sublime landscapes, Fergus captures the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide. Fergus has an innate depth, flair and natural expression that communicates beyond his years. His ability to transition from a full flowing, radiant pulse-wash of sound to a tranquil, first light stillness in a moment is simply breathtaking. Whilst his music is built on the folk traditions he has grown up with, it’s the versatility of rhythm and colour, from the most delicate shades to the highest energy, that’s captivating.

MORE HUMAN THAN MACHINE

It happens rarely that musicians working with improvisation at the sharp end of experimental practice are so attuned to contemporary style and taste that their work reaches beyond “the serious” or “the popular”. Building Instrument is such a group. On their last album Mangelen Min, they mix electronic echoes and the classical baroque. As on the two previous albums, it comprises a mixture of real-time playing on a wide range of instruments, live sampling, and electronic processing.

TOP NOTCH SWING-JAZZ!

Best known for her interpretations of The Great American Songbook, Majken Christiansen is one of scandinavia's foremost jazz singers and has released a long line of albums with performances of jazz standards. After 15 years of collaborating in bigger constellations, Majken and Kompen agreed to start their own quintet in honor of their love for 1940s and 50s swing-jazz. After a year of playing together, they have performed on multiple festivals and jazz clubs and are united once again to perform their swinging, joyful tunes as part of this year’s Oslo Jazz.
