A PIONEER OF THE 21ST CENTURY AND A MEETING BETWEEN TWO LEGENDARY BASS PLAYERS

Alexander Hawkins is widely recognised as one of the UK’s most innovative and imaginative pianists and composers. He is self-taught with a great love and deep knowledge of the jazz tradition which he brings, along with classical references, to his compositions and improvisations.

The year is 1945 and in Paris and Lillestrøm, two future jazz legends are born: Henri Texier and Arild Andresen. 78 years later, they meet at Oslojazz to play together for the first time.

This is a double concert.

LINDA FREDRIKSSONS MUSICAL DIARY

With their solo project “Juniper”, Fredriksson steps forth as a composer and a leader unveiling the music of their “shy and quiet” side. The end result is an honest, personal album. Juniper is a world unto itself, and Fredriksson describes the process as one of chosen isolation: “It’s a world of my own and a place of solitude amid all the chaos. A comfy bubble to be in.”

This time Fredriksson, known for virtuosic alto and baritone saxophone playing, also lists bass clarinet, guitar, drum programming, synths and ambience recordings as their instrumentation.

OLD NORSE MYTHS IN THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE CLIMATE CRISIS

Karl Seglem is a ground breaking musician on both tenor saxophone and the traditional norwegian instrument “bukkehorn” (billy goat's horn). He seamlessly moves between jazz, folk, world jazz and free improvisations and mixes expressions from acoustic folk with electronica and jazz.

Karl Seglem shares the world premiere of Mytevegar with us at Oslo Jazz Festival 2023.

NOT ANOTHER TOOTHLESS PASTICHE

Gathering eleven of his best friends and favorite musicians, the Andreas Røysum ensemble cultivates a rich, adventurous, and flexible musical universe that is inspired by the expressive jazz tradition, contemporary music, and traditional music. Andreas Røyrum ensemble believes in music's transcendental and conciliatory powers and utilizes Røysums´ strong compositions as a springboard for melting together as one; to expand time and space.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

Trondheim-based Amund Stenøien, has been leading a quartet of young musicians for the past years, while establishing his own modern jazz expression. The result is an innovative jazz quartet with strong themes, explosive solos, and truly inspiring originality.
Their music aims to be poignant all the while offering complex rhythmic and harmonic structures under the surface.

LET THE MUSIDC BREATHE

Ellen Andrea Wang’s third studio album, Closeness, features Wang on bass and vocals, with Rob Luft on guitar and Jon Fält on Drums. A commanding presence in any ensemble she plays in, her soft tone and vocal precision are always counterbalanced with heavy and assertive grooves from her double-bass, interlocking with drums, jazz, pop and groove alike.
